Dr. Donald Sonn: Contact Laser Vaporization

Dr. Donald Sonn is a physician whose specialty is urology, which treats disorders of the urinary tract in men and women, and the male reproductive organs. He has been practicing at the Urology Group of Western New England since 1997.

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Donald Sonn has written and published research papers on many subjects relating to his specialty. He published an article called “Contact Laser Vaporization of the Prostate: Sidefire Technique,” co-written with Gopal H. Badlani and appearing in the April 1995 issue of the Journal of Endourology.

“With the development of contact sidefiring fibers,” he wrote, “urologists have gained a valuable tool to deliver laser energy more precisely into prostatic tissue.” The sidefiring fibers, at the time a new technology in laser treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, allowed the surgeon to deliver laser energy laterally, or from the side. This had not previously been possible in laser surgery.

“Contact laser prostatectomy can now be viewed as a well-established procedure that offers several distinct advantages over conventional methods such as transurethral resection of the prostate,” Dr. Donald Sonn continued. “The results of experimental and clinical studies are presented, supporting the value of this new modality.”

Dr. Donald Sonn received his medical training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York. He graduated in 1991, and went on to do his Residencies at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park. He is a member of the American Medical Association, and was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2001.
