Donald Sonn is an urologist and surgeon with nearly 20 years of experience in his field. He attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University where he was awarded several honors for academic achievement. After he earned his M.D. in 1991, He went on to pursue a residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
In 1997, he completed his residency and took a job working for the Urology Group of Western New England. They have been in practice for nearly 30 years and provide care for both children and adults suffering from urological disorders including: urinary tract infections, kidney and bladder disorders, infertility, erectile dysfunction and several other common disorders. All of the doctors on their staff are highly trained surgeons and each specializes in a certain area of urology.
Dr. Donald Sonn specializes in the treatment of impotence, prostheses, stone disease, brachytherapy and the use of the Da Vinci robotics system for the treatment of prostate cancer.
Brachytherapy is an advanced treatment option for the treatment of cancer that involves placing radioactive materials directly inside the body. This allows surgeons to place them within in close proximity to the cancer cells. Brachytherapy is sometimes chosen over external radiation treatment due to shorter recovery time. Once the treatment is over, the materials are, of course, removed from the patient.
In his role as a Surgeon Dr. Donald Sonn, also uses Greenlight Laser Therapy to treat benign prostate hyperplasia, which is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate that affects more than half of men in their 60s. One of the benefits to the treatment offered by Donald Sonn is, unlike previous treatments, the laser therapy is relatively non-invasive and can be performed as an outpatient procedure which allows patients to get back to their lives sooner. The previous surgical option was what is known as called transurethral resection of the prostate which was a very invasive procedure that could result in long recovery time and even necessitate a blood transfusion.
Donald Sonn’s experience and professionalism have earned him numerous honors throughout the course of his career and he is currently serving as the Chief of Surgery for the Cooley Dickinson Hospital where he seeks to provide the highest standards of care for his patients.
