The field of medicine is one of the most challenging yet rewarding fields to pursue a career in and part of the reason it is so rewarding is due to the sheer variety of work that is available for M.D.s. There are many different careers one can take in the field of medicine. Some choose to become pediatricians or general practitioners while others, like Donald Sonn, choose to specialize in a certain area such as urology or psychiatry.
One of the first decisions that a prospective M.D. needs to make is to figure out what they want to do with their degree. If they like to help children then they might look into becoming a pediatrician which is a doctor that specializes in the care of children. If they want to take care of adults, but want to deal with a broad practice then becoming a general practitioner might be the right career path. General practitioners are the classic “family doctor” that most people go to when they have the flu or any other common illness.
The real diversity in medicine comes from specializing. There are many different types of doctors who focus on specific diseases or parts of the body. For example, psychiatrists specialize in diseases of the mind. Psychiatrists are often confused with psychologists, but it’s important to keep in mind that psychiatrists are trained medical doctors and have the ability to prescribe medication which is something psychologists aren’t able to do. Psychiatry is just one example of the many different fields of medicine.
Another potential career for an M.D. is in the area of academia. Many M.D.s eventually become teachers and professors passing their skills on to the next generation of doctors. It is even fairly common for doctors to teach at universities while they are still practicing medicine. This is what Donald Sonn did for several years when he taught at Tufts University School of Medicine.
But there are other roles in academia besides teaching. Research into diseases, various cures and treatment options is an important part of understanding and eventually ending diseases. And this kind of research isn’t limited to a university setting. Many private companies are funding research into new drugs and other treatment options.
Donald Sonn is highly skilled surgeon who specialized in the field of urology. He currently works for the Urology Group of Western New England and serves as the Chief of Surgery for Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
